v1.68.0.0 fix: next tracker wave — 16 verified fixes in, 90 stale PRs and 21 issues closed with receipts (#2632)
* fix(plan-tune): reject never-ask on one-way ids at --write --check already ignored those prefs; --write still stored them and --stats counted them as a working NEVER_ASK. Refuse the write and count leftover on-disk prefs as INERT_ONE_WAY. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com> * Fix: gstack-config get returns "" with exit 0 for keys that have no default Skill preambles read configuration with VAR=$(gstack-config get <key> 2>/dev/null || echo "<default>") and that fallback only fires on a non-zero exit. lookup_default ended in a catch-all that echoed "" and returned 0, so for any key missing from the table VAR came back empty and the default written right there in the preamble was unreachable. The skill then branched on a value it never specified: "skip entirely if QUESTION_TUNING is false", reached with QUESTION_TUNING="". Four keys that skills actually read had no entry and took that path: question_tuning -> callers assume "false" repo_mode -> callers assume "unknown" team_mode -> callers assume "false" transcript_ingest_mode -> callers assume "off" Each default above is the value the call sites already substitute in their own `|| echo` fallback, so this only makes reachable what was already intended. The catch-all now returns non-zero. That is deliberately scoped to the unknown-key arm alone: keys whose default is intentionally empty still exit 0, because "" is their real answer and their callers depend on it -- cross_project_learnings ("unset triggers the first-time prompt"), redact_repo_visibility ("empty falls through to gh/glab detection"), salience_allowlist, user_slug_at_*. Making every empty answer an error would have broken those. test/gstack-config-defaults.test.ts pins the class rather than the four instances: it parses the case arms and asserts every `gstack-config get <key>` site in the tree is covered, so adding a read without a default fails CI. It also pins the exit-code contract in both directions. Verified failing against the pre-fix script, where it names exactly those four keys. On empty stdin that prints "(no findings)" and exits 0, so: $ gstack-redact install-prepush-hooks # plural typo gstack-redact scan — repo UNKNOWN (no findings) $ echo $? 0 No hook was installed, and the operator has every reason to believe the credential guard is armed. A guard that silently no-ops must never exit 0. Two smaller faults in the same dispatch, both of which lead people here: - There was no --help handler, so `gstack-redact --help` fell through to the scanner. Piping a credential to it scanned the secret and exited 3. - With no piped input and no --from-file, readInput() blocks on readSync(fd 0) until an EOF that an interactive terminal never sends. That prints nothing at all, so it reads as a hang rather than as "this is a filter, feed it". Now: --help/-h/help prints usage and exits 0; an unrecognised positional prints the offender and exits 1; a TTY with nothing piped in prints usage instead of blocking. "scan" stays accepted, because the human output header reads "gstack-redact scan — repo …" and that is what people type. Usage errors exit 1, deliberately not 2 or 3. Those mean MEDIUM and HIGH findings and callers gate dispatch on them, so a usage error exiting 2 would be read as "medium findings — prompt the user". A test pins that. Tests: 4 written failing first, then fixed. Full suite 7,722 pass / 0 fail. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(browse): one ambiguous ref no longer kills the whole annotated screenshot `snapshot -a` exits 1 with "Selector matched multiple elements" on most real pages, so /qa, /canary and /land-and-deploy silently produce reports whose screenshots do not exist. Plain `screenshot <path>` is unaffected. Refs are built as getByRole(role, {name}) and disambiguated with .nth() when role+name repeats. That disambiguation cannot fire for a node with NO accessible name: the locator degrades to getByRole(role) with no name filter, and the count driving .nth() is taken from the FILTERED aria snapshot while getByRole matches the unfiltered DOM. Measured on a live page: the tree surfaced 2 unnamed paragraphs, the DOM had 9. Landmarks (banner/main/contentinfo) and paragraphs are correctly unnamed per ARIA, so this is the common case rather than an edge case. boundingBox() then hits Playwright strict mode, and the catch allowlisted only timeout/closed/Target/Execution-context messages — so the strict-mode error was re-thrown and aborted every remaining annotation. Two changes: - `.first()` before boundingBox(), so an ambiguous ref draws a box on its first match instead of aborting. The heatmap path below has always tolerated this via a bare `catch {}`; annotate was the only path that could be killed outright. - the catch no longer re-throws on unrecognised messages. A box we cannot measure is a box we do not draw, never a reason to lose the rest of the page. Set BROWSE_DEBUG to see what was skipped. Also: `-o` passed without `-a`/`-H` was silently ignored (exit 0, no file), which reads as "screenshots are broken" rather than "you forgot a flag". It now warns and points at `browse screenshot <path>`. Motivation: diagnosing a real "uploads take 1-2 minutes" report, the only machine available was a fast developer workstation. Client-side processing measured 1.4s where the user experienced minutes, so the conclusion had to be reached arithmetically rather than observed. Throttling would have let the measurement reproduce the reporter's conditions directly. Both fit the existing posture rather than widening it: - Emulation already allows setDeviceMetricsOverride, clearDeviceMetricsOverride and setUserAgentOverride, which are equally mutating and scoped to the tab. - Neither method reads page content. setCPUThrottlingRate affects only timing; emulateNetworkConditions constrains traffic rather than inspecting it, so no request bodies, headers or cookies are exposed. Both are output: 'trusted' because they return no page-derived data. scope 'tab' for both, matching the surrounding Emulation entries. The pidfile now records ${BASHPID:-$(sh -c 'echo $PPID')} (macOS bash 3.2 has no BASHPID; the sh child's PPID is exactly this subshell). Staleness is now two independent detectors: PID liveness (as before, but against the real holder), and a 30-minute hard TTL on the heartbeat mtime — reclaimed regardless of kill -0, so a recycled PID or hung holder can't wedge the lock forever. The holder touches the pidfile after the pull and after setup, so a legitimately-slow run keeps itself alive. Empty and missing pidfiles are respected inside the TTL window (the mkdir→echo race) and reclaimed past it. Fixes #2613. The new gstack-gbrain-source-wireup --advance-only is built for the unattended cadence: git-only (no gbrain prereqs), pins every operation to the managed worktree (refuses paths that are not worktrees of the artifacts repo), refuses dirty worktrees, and never runs the force-remove recovery — a cron path must not be able to delete local changes. A static pin keeps the force-remove out. docs/gbrain-sync.md stops overclaiming the old cadence. Fixes #2516. Outcomes match code-import semantics: read-only → clean skip (skipped_policy_readonly), deny → counted refusal (skipped_policy_deny), corrupted/unreadable store → HARD ERROR before any write (state, staging, egress receipt, and import all untouched) with the recovery command named — policy corruption must never read as successful ingestion. Artifacts are never policy-filtered (their git_remote is a project slug, not a remote). Fixes #2392. Both in-repo consumers assumed the opposite; brain-cache's endpoint resolution flips to nearest-ancestor-project-first, and the stale user-first pin in brain-cache-roundtrip now pins the verified precedence. (The user-first jq in the brain-sync preamble resolver gets the same swap in the template block.) Root cause: a stray empty ~/.git directory made the walk-up crown $HOME as the outermost project root; the remote lookup ran only against that root, failed silently, and the basename fallback cached 'garrytan' sticky. NOT worktree-specific — any strong marker on a non-repo ancestor triggered it. Fix: the walk now finds the outermost ancestor whose .git actually resolves an origin remote and derives owner-repo with remote-slug's byte-identical parse; marker-only ancestors keep anchoring the basename fallback but can no longer shadow a real remote. A new cache self-heal recomputes the poisoned shape (cached == basename of a marker root while a remote-bearing repo exists below), preserving legit #2212 stickiness. Nested-repo walk-up, no-remote and non-git fallbacks, and the SLUG=/BRANCH= eval contract are unchanged, pinned by a 10-case parity suite. Store migration for pre-fix data is tracked in TODOS.md. Locks and rename-rotation designs were both reviewed and rejected (each retained a tail race); the shipped design is a maildir-style spool: one FILE per record in .brain-queue.d/ (tmp + atomic rename), the drain snapshots filenames, processes, and deletes exactly what it snapshotted. Writer and drainer never share an inode — nothing to race. Semantics: at-least-once (a crash between process and unlink re-drains; downstream content-hash dedup absorbs duplicates); retained (privacy-held) records keep their files; unparseable records are kept + warned, never destroyed. Legacy .brain-queue.jsonl migrates atomically on the next drain (crash-leftover .migrating files recovered too); status/drop-queue count both surfaces; discover-new writes spool records and advances its cursor per-record-written. symptom). beforeAll now generates a host's artifacts iff its ship SKILL.md
is missing — never overwriting existing ones, so stale artifacts still fail
the golden. The file is also classified TREE_MUTATING so its provisioning
runs in the serial window, not racing parallel readers.
Verified: full pass with .agents/ and .factory/ deleted (74/74 in isolation).

This harness has never been able to detect a regression, and reassuring
output that cannot fail is worse than none. In-progress runs are now
excluded by role, and a run with nothing to compare against says NO
BASELINE instead of claiming stability.

New static tripwire (test/pty-skill-seeding-wiring.test.ts): any test
file that sends a slash command over the PTY must route through a
runPlanSkill* helper or pass seedSkills: true — an unseeded slash-command
test spends money and measures nothing. hermetic-wiring.test.ts now
blesses the repo-tree seeding path explicitly (config dir under runRoot,
symlinks into the repo checkout, never operator ~/.claude).
The CI "Register gstack skills for PTY smoke" step keeps a keep-me note:
container cross-mount symlinks defeat the TUI scanner and HOME is not
hermeticized, so the real-file copies there must survive this change.

Importing eval-store no longer spawns the gstack-slug subprocess: the
module-level DEFAULT_EVAL_DIR constant is now a memoized defaultEvalDir()
resolved at collector construction. Resolution order: explicit
constructor arg, then GSTACK_EVAL_DIR, then slug detection — so the
sharded paid runner can point each shard child at its own
<evalDir>/shards/<slug>/ dir with plain env, no --preload.
Runs collected under a shards/ subdir record their slug in the eval
JSON (EvalResult.shard). findPreviousRun scans one shards/<slug>/ level
and prefers same-slug priors, so each shard baselines against its own
history instead of whichever shard flushed last. eval:list,
eval:summary, and eval:compare enumerate the same one level of shard
subdirs; eval:compare's no-arg mode also stops picking an in-progress
accumulator as the after-run.
eval-watch stays flat (documented follow-up): it tails a single dir for
live progress and gains nothing from per-shard baselines until the
runner emits a merged stream.

scripts/test-paid-shards.ts runs the gate/periodic tier one Bun process
per test file, with an EXTERNAL wall-clock timeout that SIGKILLs the
shard's detached process group and an aggregate that distinguishes
passed / failed / timed-out / never-started — partial execution can no
longer read as a pass. Bun's native --shard/--isolate covers none of
this: no process-group kill (hung claude/codex PTY grandchildren
survive in-process isolation), no never-started taxonomy, no per-shard
env. Each shard child gets GSTACK_EVAL_DIR=<evalDir>/shards/<slug>/
(slug = test filename sans extension, stable across runs) so shard
baselines compare against their own prior runs.
Output classification lives in scripts/test-strict-output.ts (strict
exit-code derivation, incremental fail-line classifier, child signal
forwarding) so the runner and any future strict bun-test wrapper share
one implementation. Enumeration derives from the shared paid-test-set
module; tier exclusion fires only on an explicit whole-file
EVALS_TIER === '<other>' guard.
package.json gains test:gate:sharded / test:periodic:sharded, and
eval:bg:gate / eval:bg:periodic now run the sharded scripts with detach
timeouts sized to the worst case (gate: 49 shards x 30min / 4 jobs ~
6.2h -> 25200s; periodic: 59 -> 28800s).
test/paid-shards.test.ts pins enumeration, tier classification, and the
kill-and-continue property with a real busy-loop shard.

- lastRawLine tail-reads the final 4KB instead of loading the whole
ledger, so appends stay O(1) as the file grows.
- WARN-at-size: past 25MB writeReceipt emits one self-explanatory
stderr warning per process (what the ledger is, how to inspect it,
rotation TODO); verifyLedger gains a sizeWarning field. Rotation
TODO carries the chain-genesis sketch (new generation's first record
embeds the prior file's tail hash).
bin/gstack-egress-receipt is a bun script bridging shell callers:
write|outcome subcommands, exit 3 + EGRESS_RECEIPT_FAILED on stderr on
failure; --no-payload records sha256:null for git-class ops.

are consumed immediately per call — no EXIT traps, since callers like
gstack-telemetry-sync own their own EXIT trap and a sourced trap would
clobber it.
Tested end-to-end against a local Bun.serve listener: receipt sha256
equals the sha256 of the bytes the listener received, fail-closed
refusal never touches the network and carries the problem/cause/fix
stderr shape, fail-open warns and proceeds.

- gstack-telemetry-sync: the batch POST now writes the payload to a
temp file, receipts those exact bytes fail-closed, and hands curl the
SAME file. On refusal nothing is sent and the cursor does not
advance, so the batch stays buffered for the next run. The HTTP
status is recorded as the receipt outcome.
- gstack-update-check: fail-open receipts (warn + proceed) on the
Supabase ping POST, both VERSION curls (via a local
_receipted_version_fetch helper that skips non-network schemes), and
git ls-remote. The ping receipt is written inside the backgrounded
subshell, so it can never block the script's exit.
- gstack-brain-sync: fail-closed git-class receipts. The push receipt
is written BEFORE the commit consumes the queue, so a refused receipt
leaves the queue intact and the next run retries the whole drain
(pinned by a new queue-intact-on-refusal test, including the
problem/cause/fix refusal message shape). The retry-path fetch and
retry push carry their own fail-closed receipts.

Streams pass through untouched (response bodies returned as-is;

generate, variants (injected fetchFn passes through), iterate (both
threaded and fresh paths), evolve (image + screenshot analysis), check,

body only — the PAT never reaches the ledger or any log. Refusal

- git-class sha256:null receipts, fail-open: gstack-artifacts-init
(ls-remote, initial push, fetch/pull recovery, retry push),
gstack-brain-restore (staging clone, existing-repo fetch),
gstack-session-update (self-update pull).
gstack-team-init needs no wiring: every git clone in it is inside an
echoed instruction string, not an executed command.
The lib now self-locates with shell builtins only (no dirname), so
sourcing works under the whitelist-PATH test harnesses.

in a REASONED exemption list where each entry carries its why.

- grants: what CAN leave, built on the upstream config keys only

redact_prepush_hook via gstack-config get) — each grant names its
file, key, and the exact revoke command.
CLI smoke tests spawn the real bin against a temp GSTACK_HOME,
including a broken-chain fixture asserting exit 3.

* feat(cli): context-bill — token bill-of-materials (stripped port)
lib/context-bill.ts, ported from the v2 fork and STRIPPED to the tiers
this repo's skills can exercise: ALWAYS-ON (per-skill frontmatter bytes
with dead-key and foreign-host-file flags), EAGER (SKILL.md + any
forced 'for every invocation' references), on-disk totals, --diff,
--budget, and --exact with the calibration table. The fork's
CONDITIONAL/TRANSITIVE/LAZY/FAST-PATH parsers understand only its
dispatcher layout and were dropped; the tier fields stay in the report
shape (empty/zero/null) so re-adding a parser is additive.
TOKEN_DIVISORS and their provenance docblock kept; --help notes
recalibration via --exact's calibration block.
Three upstream fixes over the fork:
(a) findSkillDirs treats the walk ROOT as a container — the repo root's
router SKILL.md is billed AND its children are walked (the fork
short-circuited and billed one skill); walkMd skips node_modules
and dot-directories.
(b) installed-tree layout: subdirs that are their own repo checkout
(a gstack/ clone inside ~/.claude/skills, detected by .git) are
skipped, and directory symlinks (connect-chrome) are followed with
a container-recursion cycle guard.
(c) ROUTER_KEYS widened to the upstream frontmatter contract {name,
description, version, allowed-tools, triggers, preamble-tier}.
--exact writes an egress receipt (sink context-bill-exact, host
api.anthropic.com) BEFORE any count_tokens POST; if the receipt cannot
be written the run degrades to the offline estimate with a warning —
nothing is sent unrecorded. bin/gstack-context-bill is the bun shim.
Tests: fixture-tree ledgers, the three fixes, --diff/--budget exit
codes, --exact with injected fetch (envelope subtraction, receipt
ordering, fail-open degradation), CLI smoke test, and ground truth
against THIS repo via test/helpers/skill-census.ts.

* test(catalog): aggregate discovery-surface budget with ratchet protocol
Every host loads every skill's frontmatter name + description at
discovery, every session. applyCatalogTrim in scripts/gen-skill-docs.ts
shapes each description and the 160KB per-file warn covers body size,
but nothing capped the aggregate frontmatter — the catalog could grow
one reasonable-looking description at a time. This test is that
enforcement layer.
Measures the catalog via test/helpers/skill-census.ts authoredSkills
(symlink-deduped, root router counted separately as the _gstack-command
alias line item): 53 skills + router = 4,420 bytes = 1,105
token-equivalents today, asserted <= 1,150 (~4% headroom). Per-skill
sub-cap of 260 bytes (largest today: design-consultation at 229), plus
a non-empty-description check.
Failure messages are self-service ratchets: they print the new total,
the delta, and the update protocol (bump the constant AND the
derivation comment in the same commit; trim instead of grow for
existing descriptions). Parser handles folded block scalars
(description: >-) for fork parity; import-free by design so it
survives generator refactors.

* fix(browse): extension token bootstrap moves to pinned-origin POST; /health carries no token
GET /health is now liveness/status only in every mode — both token
carve-outs (headed-mode disjunct AND chrome-extension:// Origin
disjunct) are removed. Token bootstrap is POST /extension-token on the
local listener: the Origin header must be exactly
chrome-extension://<GSTACK_EXTENSION_ID> and the Host header's hostname
must parse to 127.0.0.1 or localhost (parsed via new URL, never literal
equality — Host arrives as '127.0.0.1:34567'). Wrong origin/host → 403
with no detail. The tunnel surface 404s the endpoint (not in
TUNNEL_PATHS, verified by test).
The extension ID is pinned by a new "key" field (RSA public key) in
extension/manifest.json; browse/scripts/extension-id.ts reproduces the
ID derivation (first 16 bytes of SHA-256 of the DER public key, hex
mapped 0-9a-f → a-p). The private key is not committed anywhere —
unpacked/baked-in loads only need the public key.
Extension side: background.js bootstraps and refreshes the token via
POST /extension-token (403 → disconnected state); sidepanel.js direct
connect path does the same; sidepanel-terminal.js's dead /health token
fallback (read AUTH_TOKEN/authToken keys the server never sent,
hardcoded port) is replaced with the window.gstackAuthToken path.
MIGRATION NOTE: the manifest key pins the extension ID, so existing
installs' side-panel local state (saved port, snoozes) resets once —
explained in-product via a one-time notice (flag
gstack_id_migrated_v162). After upgrading the server, restart the
browser so the old service worker stops polling for a token GET /health
no longer serves.

* fix(office-hours): #1671 — session writer was writing to the legacy file User-visible symptom: returning /office-hours users get the same closing pitch every visit, no matter how many times they've run the skill. The welcome_back tier (which exists specifically to skip the pitch for returning users) was unreachable. Live since 2026-04-18 / v1.0.0.0 on every fresh-$HOME user. Root cause: the v1.0.0.0 migration moved the read path to ~/.gstack/developer-profile.json but left the writer in office-hours/SKILL.md.tmpl writing to the legacy ~/.gstack/builder-profile.jsonl. Reader and writer disagreed on storage, so SESSION_COUNT never incremented and /office-hours always treated the user as a first-timer. Fix: - bin/gstack-developer-profile: new --log-session subcommand that read-modify-writes developer-profile.json's sessions[] array (atomic mktemp+mv, signals/resources/topics aggregation, gbrain-enqueue mirror of gstack-timeline-log:40). Naming matches the gstack-*-log family verb. - bin/gstack-developer-profile: do_read filters mode:"resources" entries when picking LAST_PROJECT/LAST_ASSIGNMENT/LAST_DESIGN_TITLE so the Phase 6 resources auto-append doesn't clobber real-session state. Resolution priority: CLI flag > .gstack/version-path > "VERSION". The resolved path threads through all four call sites — git show origin/<base>:<path>, the GitHub Contents API, the GitLab files API, and the local sibling-worktree scan — and shows up in the JSON output as version_path so /ship and operators can see what got picked. The previous warning "could not fetch VERSION (fork or private)" was misleading whenever the real cause was wrong path. The new wording names the path that 404'd and hints at the two knobs. Now appends to the queue in-process. 3. compute_paths_to_stage ends in print(p); Windows Python emits CRLF, the bash `read -r` keeps the trailing CR, and `git add -- "path<CR>"` matches nothing under `2>/dev/null || true`. Now strips the CR before staging. The in-process enqueue mirrors gstack-brain-enqueue's contract: one atomic O_APPEND write per record (each line < PIPE_BUF) so a parallel writer-shim append can't interleave mid-record, and the discover cursor advances only after the write succeeds, so a failed write retries instead of silently recording the file as synced. Skip-list entries are separator-normalized on both the discover and drain (compute_paths_to_stage) sides, so a backslash .brain-skip.txt entry can't be honored at discovery yet bypassed at commit. sources_add MCP support (forward-compat for when gbrain ships URL ingest).
Token consumed from GBRAIN_MCP_TOKEN env, never argv. Required to set
both 'application/json' AND 'text/event-stream' in Accept; that gotcha
costs 10 minutes of debugging when missed (regression-tested).
Live-verified against wintermute (gbrain v0.27.1).

artifacts-init compares at the canonical level so re-running with HTTPS
input doesn't trip on a stored SSH URL for the same logical repo.
The "URL form not supported" branch prints a two-line clone-then-path
form for gbrain v0.26.x; the supported branch is a one-liner with --url
ready for when gbrain ships URL ingest.

Idempotency: re-running with gbrain_mcp_mode=remote-http already in

Journaled, interruption-safe migration. Six steps, each writes to
~/.gstack/.migrations/v1.27.0.0.journal on success; re-entry resumes
from the next un-done step. On final success, journal is replaced by
~/.gstack/.migrations/v1.27.0.0.done.
Steps:
1. gh_repo_renamed gh/glab repo rename gstack-brain-$USER →
gstack-artifacts-$USER (idempotent: detects
already-renamed and skips)
2. remote_txt_renamed mv ~/.gstack-brain-remote.txt → artifacts file,
rewriting URL path to match the new repo name
3. config_key_renamed sed -i in ~/.gstack/config.yaml flips
gbrain_sync_mode → artifacts_sync_mode
4. claude_md_block sed flips "- Memory sync:" → "- Artifacts sync:"
in cwd CLAUDE.md and ~/.gstack/CLAUDE.md
5. sources_swapped gbrain sources add NEW (verify) → remove OLD
(codex Finding #6: add-before-remove ordering,
no downtime window). On remote-MCP mode, prints
commands for the brain admin instead of executing.
6. done touchfile + delete journal
User opt-out: any "n" or "skip-for-now" answer at the initial prompt
writes a marker file that prevents re-prompting; user can re-invoke
via /setup-gbrain --rerun-migration.
11 unit tests cover: nothing-to-migrate, GitHub happy path, idempotent
re-run, journal-resume mid-flight, remote-MCP print-only path,
add-before-remove ordering verification, add-fail → old source stays
registered, CLAUDE.md field rewrite.

Three new regression tests guard the rename's blast radius (per codex
Findings #1, #8, #9, #12):
- test/no-stale-gstack-brain-refs.test.ts: greps bin/, scripts/, *.tmpl,
test/ for forbidden identifiers (gstack-brain-init, gbrain_sync_mode);
fails CI if any non-allowlisted file references them.
- test/post-rename-doc-regen.test.ts: confirms gen-skill-docs output has
no stale references in any */SKILL.md (the cross-product blind spot).
- test/setup-gbrain-path4-structure.test.ts: structural lint over the
Path 4 prose contract — STOP gates after verify failure, never-write-
token rules, mode-aware CLAUDE.md block, bearer always via env-var.
Two new gate-tier E2E tests (deterministic stub HTTP server, fixed inputs):
- test/skill-e2e-setup-gbrain-remote.test.ts: Path 4 happy path. Stubs
an HTTP MCP server, drives the skill via Agent SDK with a stubbed
bearer, asserts claude.json gets the http MCP entry, CLAUDE.md gets
the remote-http block, the secret token NEVER leaks to CLAUDE.md.
- test/skill-e2e-setup-gbrain-bad-token.test.ts: stub server returns 401;
asserts the AUTH classifier hint surfaces, no MCP registration occurs,
CLAUDE.md is unchanged. Regression guard for the "verify failed → STOP"
rule.
touchfiles.ts: setup-gbrain-remote and setup-gbrain-bad-token added at
gate-tier so CI catches Path 4 regressions on every PR.
Plus a few comment refs flipped: bin/gstack-jsonl-merge, bin/gstack-timeline-log
(legacy gstack-brain-init mentions in headers).

The Agent SDK E2E tests for Path 4 (skill-e2e-setup-gbrain-remote and
skill-e2e-setup-gbrain-bad-token) are inherently non-deterministic —
the model interprets "follow Path 4 only" prompts flexibly and can
skip Step 8 (CLAUDE.md write) or shortcut past the verify helper, which
makes the gate-tier assertions flaky.
The deterministic gate coverage for Path 4 is in
test/setup-gbrain-path4-structure.test.ts: a fast structural lint that
catches AUQ-pacing regressions and prose contract drift in <200ms with
zero token spend. That test is the right tool for catching the failure
mode the gate-tier was meant to guard against.
The Agent SDK E2E tests stay available on-demand for periodic-tier runs
(EVALS=1 EVALS_TIER=periodic bun test test/skill-e2e-setup-gbrain-*.test.ts).
Also tightened the verify-error assertion to the literal field shape
("error_class": "AUTH") instead of a substring match that false-matches
the parent claude session's "needs-auth" MCP discovery markers.

Don't pass an explicit `env:` object to runAgentSdkTest. The SDK's auth pipeline misses ANTHROPIC_API_KEY when env is supplied as an object (verified against the plan-mode-no-op test, which passes no env and auths cleanly). Mutate process.env before the call instead, and restore the originals in finally so other tests don't inherit the ambient mutation. 2. The "Run /learn with no arguments" user prompt was too narrow — the model reduced it to a direct action and skipped the preamble privacy-gate directives entirely, so zero AskUserQuestions fired. feat(v1.9.0.0): gbrain-sync — cross-machine gstack memory (#1151)
* feat(gbrain-sync): queue primitives + writer shims
Adds bin/gstack-brain-enqueue (atomic append to sync queue) and
bin/gstack-jsonl-merge (git merge driver, ts-sort with SHA-256 fallback).
Wires one backgrounded enqueue call into learnings-log, timeline-log,
review-log, and developer-profile --migrate. question-log and
question-preferences stay local per Codex v2 decision.
gstack-config gains gbrain_sync_mode (off/artifacts-only/full) and
gbrain_sync_mode_prompted keys, plus GSTACK_HOME env alignment so
tests don't leak into real ~/.gstack/config.yaml.
* feat(gbrain-sync): --once drain + secret scan + push
bin/gstack-brain-sync is the core sync binary. Subcommands: --once
(drain queue, allowlist-filter, privacy-class-filter, secret-scan
staged diff, commit with template, push with fetch+merge retry),
--status, --skip-file <path>, --drop-queue --yes, --discover-new
(cursor-based detection of artifact writes that skip the shim).
Secret regex families: AWS keys, GitHub tokens (ghp_/gho_/ghu_/ghs_/
ghr_/github_pat_), OpenAI sk-, PEM blocks, JWTs, bearer-token-in-JSON.
On hit: unstage, preserve queue, print remediation hint (--skip-file
or edit), exit clean. No daemon — invoked by preamble at skill
boundaries.

bin/gstack-brain-init: idempotent first-run. git init ~/.gstack/,
.gitignore=*, canonical .brain-allowlist + .brain-privacy-map.json,
pre-commit secret-scan hook (defense-in-depth), merge driver registration
via git config, gh repo create --private OR arbitrary --remote <url>,
initial push, ~/.gstack-brain-remote.txt for new-machine discovery,
GBrain consumer registration via HTTP POST.
bin/gstack-brain-restore: safe new-machine bootstrap. Refuses clobber
of existing allowlisted files, clones to staging, rsync-copies tracked
files, re-registers merge drivers (required — not cloned from remote),
rehydrates consumers.json, prompts for per-consumer tokens.
bin/gstack-brain-uninstall: clean off-ramp. Removes .git + .brain-*
files + consumers.json + config keys. Preserves user data (learnings,
plans, retros, profile). Optional --delete-remote for GitHub repos.
bin/gstack-brain-consumer + bin/gstack-brain-reader (symlink alias):
registry management. Internal 'consumer' term; user-facing 'reader'
per DX review decision.
* feat(gbrain-sync): preamble block — privacy gate + boundary sync
scripts/resolvers/preamble/generate-brain-sync-block.ts emits bash that
runs at every skill invocation:
- Detects ~/.gstack-brain-remote.txt on machines without local .git
and surfaces a restore-available hint (does NOT auto-run restore).
- Runs gstack-brain-sync --once at skill start to drain any pending
writes (and at skill end via prose instruction).
- Once-per-day auto-pull (cached via .brain-last-pull) for append-only
JSONL files.
- Emits BRAIN_SYNC: status line every skill run.
Also emits prose for the host LLM to fire the one-time privacy
stop-gate (full / artifacts-only / off) when gbrain is detected and
gbrain_sync_mode_prompted is false. Wired into preamble.ts composition.
* test(gbrain-sync): 27-test consolidated suite
test/brain-sync.test.ts covers:
- Config: validation, defaults, GSTACK_HOME env isolation
- Enqueue: no-op gates, skip list, concurrent atomicity, JSON escape
- JSONL merge driver: 3-way + ts-sort + SHA-256 fallback
- Init + sync: canonical file creation, merge driver registration,
push-reject + fetch+merge retry path
- Init refuses different remote (idempotency)
- Cross-machine restore round-trip (machine A write → machine B sees)
- Secret scan across all 6 regex families (AWS, GH, OpenAI, PEM, JWT,
bearer-JSON). --skip-file unblock remediation
- Uninstall removes sync config, preserves user data
- --discover-new idempotence via mtime+size cursor
Behaviors verified via integration smokes during implementation. Known
follow-up: bun-test 5s default timeout needs 30s wrapper for
spawnSync-heavy tests.
* docs(gbrain-sync): user guide + error lookup + README section
docs/gbrain-sync.md: setup walkthrough, privacy modes, cross-machine
workflow, secret protection, two-machine conflict handling, uninstall,
troubleshooting reference.
docs/gbrain-sync-errors.md: problem/cause/fix index for every
user-visible error. Patterned on Rust's error docs + Stripe's API
error reference.
README.md: 'Cross-machine memory with GBrain sync' section near the
top (discovery moment), plus docs-table entry.
