review collect: a rating verb denies a severity like "is" does (GST-1628) (#4075)

* review collect: a rating verb denies a severity like "is" does (GST-1628)

A reader closing sentence such as "None of these rises to CRITICAL." (gstack-evals#247) or "Nothing reaches the CRITICAL floor." (#4055) collected as CRITICAL because the denial grammar only knew copulas. Rating verbs now deny in closingSummary and summaryCandidate; a regression corpus of 12 captured reader outputs pins 16 real CRITICALs and both phantoms.

Co-authored-by: capy-ai[bot] <230910855+capy-ai[bot]@users.noreply.github.com>

* fix: pre-landing review fixes

A rating verb no longer denies a severity it takes as its object ("Neither fix clears the P0."): "the <label>" rates only with a floor noun after it, and clear is no rating verb. The floor nouns apply only after a rating verb and end at a word boundary, so "no CRITICAL barrier" keeps its label and the pre-GST-1628 denial branch is unchanged.

- **A reader's closing sentence that rates nothing CRITICAL no longer counts as a blocker.** The review collector read "None of these rises to CRITICAL." (gstack-evals#247) and "Nothing reaches the CRITICAL floor." (#4055) as CRITICAL findings, because its denial grammar knew only "is", so `blocking_found` carried a phantom that lead judgment was not allowed to lower. A rating verb (rises to, reaches, meets, qualifies as, would rise to) now denies the way "is" does: such a closing sentence collects at INFORMATIONAL, and on a line that also names a file:line it is a summary candidate that lead judgment may lower with a reason. Every other label is unchanged, checked against 296 captured reader outputs. (GST-1628)

1. **FIXABLE — A shadowing tag bypasses the self-base guard.** `lib/gate-diff/git.ts:103–105` resolves the full tracking ref’s SHA but returns its ambiguous short name; `bin/gstack-gate-diff:170` then checks that short name. With `refs/remotes/origin/feature=HEAD` and `refs/tags/origin/feature=<base>`, the guard checks the tag while the diff uses HEAD, producing an empty scan instead of refusing. Reproduced: `shortRefRefused=false`, `fullTrackingRefRefused=true`. Return and check the full tracking ref or resolved SHA. Severity: High. Blocks: yes.
2. **FIXABLE — Active file-level bot findings are silently discarded.** `lib/review-bots.ts:147` requires `position != null`, but GitHub’s `subject_type: "file"` review comments have no line position. A valid root CodeRabbit file comment therefore disappears from triage. Reproduced with a file-level authorization finding: fetch exited 0, reported `coderabbit=0`, and wrote no records. Handle file-level comments separately rather than treating every null position as outdated. Severity: Medium. Blocks: yes.
Recommendation: Fix before shipping because a shadowing tag bypasses the self-base guard and lets gate-diff return an empty scan against HEAD.

1. `lib/review-fetch.ts:189` — Testing every ancestor against `p + '/x'` incorrectly forbids sibling files. With `forbid_paths: ["lib/x"]`, `forbiddenPath(..., "lib/review-fetch.ts")` returns `true`; native Git with the generated `lib/x` and `lib/x/**` exclusions correctly retains that file. Consequently, `bin/gstack-review-plan:226` drops legitimate code from the keep-back list. When an active `review_exclude_paths` pattern covers that directory, code otherwise protected from exclusion silently disappears from reviewers’ diffs. Match actual ancestors, not a fabricated child named `x`. Severity: Medium. Blocks: yes
Recommendation: Fix before shipping because the fabricated `/x` match can silently remove sibling code from mandatory review.

1. **A concurrent red backstop can erase an admitted repair.** `scripts/train-backstop.ts:214–228` reads the freeze without the land lock, then persists that snapshot. If land records its repair between those operations, `persist()` resolves the notes conflict with `ours`, replacing the new admission with `repair: null`. I reproduced this through `runBackstop()` and real notes pushes: origin held repair #7 immediately after admission and null after the backstop returned successfully. Another repair can then land before #7 is judged; a green backstop also lacks the admission needed to unfreeze. Severity: High; Blocks: yes
2. **Reverting to a previously covered tree leaves the queue permanently frozen.** `scripts/train-backstop.ts:170` invokes clearing only after an actual green gate, but the existing coverage return at lines 157–160 bypasses that gate. An admitted revert matching a retained green-train prefix returns `covered` forever, while its merged admission blocks another repair. I reproduced two consecutive callbacks with valid freeze/land evidence: both returned `covered`, dispatched zero gates, and left `cleared_at: null`. Active freezes must bypass coverage and obtain the required gate. Severity: High; Blocks: yes
3. **Legacy train freezes cannot use the promised direct-repair path.** `lib/ship-queue-land-direct.ts:42–45,216–217` admits these freezes, but admission runs only after acquiring the land lock. A partially published train retains a `phase: freeze` lock, and direct land has no authorized takeover for it. Reproduced with green pin checks: `--repair` returns `QUEUE_LAND_LOCKED`; adding `--break-lock` returns `QUEUE_TRAIN_FROZEN`. With trains disabled, the documented recovery remains impossible. Severity: Medium; Blocks: yes
Recommendation: request changes because a concurrent red backstop can erase repair admission and reopen the frozen queue before that repair is judged.

The child's review against that parent never covered the retained script. Classify the parent's manifest changes against main before excluding them. Severity: High. Blocks: yes
2. **Historical parent acceptance can hide a rollback of main's security fix.** `/workspace/gstack/lib/ship-release.ts:219,255–256` accepts a historical landing but inspects only paths differing between the reviewed and current trees. If main subsequently fixes a parent line and the child's merge keeps the old parent version, that path is unchanged since review and never examined. Reproduced main changing `MIN_TOKEN_LENGTH` from 8 to 16 while the merge retained 8: `heldBy` found the historical squash, and finish reported `behavior=0` and fresh docs despite the rollback against main. Compare the current branch patch's paths too. Severity: High. Blocks: yes
3. **The absorbed-change shortcut ignores executable and symlink modes.** `/workspace/gstack/lib/ship-patch.ts:132–141` compares blob bytes only. After a child reviews a `100644 → 100755` change, reverting it to main's `100644` leaves identical blobs, so `baseHolds` incorrectly returns true. Reproduced `comparePath=changed`, `baseHolds=true`, and finish routing the reverted executable as `base=1 behavior=0`. This can ship a nonexecutable entry point without re-review. Validate tree-entry modes before granting this shortcut. Severity: Medium. Blocks: yes
Recommendation: Request changes because an unlanded package.json postinstall can pass parent validation and escape the child's review.

Checked: the one-line diff in b19fc09; the cross-references in docs/captain.md:313-336 and captain/templates/brief.md:36, which still carry the red-check clause the fix list says it dropped; the anchor #plan-approve-ship, which is unchanged; and test assertions on the bullet (captain-skill.test.ts only matches the section structure, and no test matches removed wording). REVIEWED_TREE: 565fdc2665face3fc18f35891625bff2d56a1697 /workspace/gstack
I found four problems. One blocks: the `lanes` proof accepts a `.gstack/pregate.json` edit that removes required CI jobs, as long as the edit also adds one lane (finding 1). I read the non-fixture source diff in full against ef64250 (15 files, +318/−49) and ran local repros. The focused suites `test/ship-bounded-route.test.ts` and `test/ship-rereview-triggers.test.ts` pass (46 pass, 0 fail, run in this checkout).
**Coverage.** I reviewed the fixtures and tests in summary mode only, so coverage is reduced there. Those files are the four ship SKILL goldens, the `review-depth.ts` review pin, a new replay `GST-1276.json`, a new `test/ship-bounded-route.test.ts` (271 lines: lanes, bookkeeping, literal-only, diff-scope and rebind cases), small edits to `ship-control-flow` and `ship-rereview-triggers`, and a size-ledger entry. I didn't read their payload bytes. gstack check on this machine: `gstack: ok 1.95.5.0 for=review` (behind=11).
**1. The `lanes` proof misses any pregate key outside headPolicyDiff's FROZEN list. FIXABLE.**
`boundedPaths` (`lib/ship-patch.ts`, the lanes branch) decides "only adds lanes" with `headPolicyDiff`. That function compares only the FROZEN keys and `dependencies`. `run_profiles`, `remote_gate_runs`, `ship_lanes_from` and `sealed` are valid pregate keys that it never compares. Pregate's own `headPolicy` can safely ignore them, because it applies only the added lanes at head. Finish is different: the edited file itself merges and becomes main's policy.
Repro: I took a temp repo with this repository's `.gstack/pregate.json` and made a 3-line edit. It adds one `dependencies` entry and cuts `run_profiles["ci-reuse/free-tests"].jobs` from 8 jobs to `["free-plan"]`. `boundedPaths` returned `{"kinds":{".gstack/pregate.json":"lanes"},"refused":[]}`.
So an edit that loosens which jobs a CI-reuse run must pass takes one scoped reader. That reader's note only asks it to check lane globs. This contradicts the documented "any other key stops", on a path that `isGatePath` itself marks as a gate path.
Fix: for the lanes kind, require every top-level key except `dependencies` to be canonically equal at the reviewed and current trees, then apply `headPolicyDiff` to `dependencies`. Add the repro as a test.
Severity: High. Blocks: yes
**2. `literalOnly` lets a changed expected value through as a "literal". FIXABLE.**
`gateEditedPaths` returned `[]` (meaning scoped reader, not behavior) for both of these:
- (a) `const expected = 'abc';` changed to `'abd'`, where a later `expect(f()).toBe(expected)` reads it. The statement scan stops at the previous `;`, and `\bexpect\b` doesn't match `expected`.
- (b) `const v = run(); /* don't */ expect(v).toBe(1); const tag = 'z';` with `toBe(1)` changed to `toBe(2)`. The apostrophe in the comment pairs with the later `'`, so `QUOTED` blanks the assertion before `CHECK_CALL` runs.
The changelog says "A changed expected value ... still stops", and that's false for both. Rust lifetimes (`'a`) and apostrophes in comments hit (b) naturally.
Fix: strip comments before blanking quoted strings, and refuse a pair whose emptied span held code tokens. Then either refuse a changed binding that an assertion later names, or drop that line from the changelog.
Severity: Medium. Blocks: no (the scoped reader still reads the hunk)
**3. The audit-prose proof only shows the snapshot came after the edit. INVESTIGATE.**
`gstack-docs-candidate snapshot` hashes every path the branch changed (`selected` defaults to committed, staged, unstaged and untracked). So `audited[p]` exists for any branch-changed doc. Any edit of 20 lines or fewer, made after review and before the Step 14.5 snapshot, passes as "the audit's". That covers `docs/review-policy.md`, `docs/ship-policy.md`, `docs/captain|unattended|pregate.md`, `AGENTS.md` and `CLAUDE.md`, which are the policy text that defines caps and gates.
Fix: bind the proof to the audit's own edit set (the audit record's edited paths, or the `--docs` paths), not to `hashes`.
Severity: Medium. Blocks: no
**4. Rebind fails after any base merge between the targeted read and head. INVESTIGATE.**
`need` in `bin/gstack-ship-receipt` holds every non-metadata path changed from the read to head. That includes paths finish routed `base` (merge-only changes), and the scoped record never lists those. So `scopedReadCovers` returns false after any base merge. That's fail-closed and safe, but the feature is lost exactly when lanes usually need it.
Separately, a bounded edit that adds a new targeted class rebinds with the record's old classes. The later REVIEW_TARGETED verdict then refuses it (also fail-closed), so the `TARGETED_REBOUND:` line is misleading in that case.
Severity: Low. Blocks: no
Recommendation: Fix the lanes proof in boundedPaths (lib/ship-patch.ts) because a 3-line pregate.json edit that drops 7 of the 8 required CI-reuse jobs is classified `lanes` and merges with only one scoped reader.

Range: `ef64250..HEAD` (`60f8c46`). I read all the non-fixture source in full: `lib/ship-patch.ts`, `lib/ship-release.ts`, `lib/ship-policy*.ts`, `lib/review-depth.ts`, `bin/gstack-diff-scope`, the docs, the changelog fragment and `ship/SKILL.md.tmpl`. I also read what that code calls: `headPolicyDiff`, `parseConfig`, `classifyPath` and `gstack-docs-candidate snapshot`. **Fixtures and tests were reviewed in summary mode only.** That covers the 4 host goldens (one line each, for the "one reader (no round)" wording), the review-pin repin, the `GST-1276` replay pin, the size ledger, small edits to `ship-control-flow` and `ship-rereview-triggers`, and the new `test/ship-bounded-route.test.ts`. I ran that test file locally and got 12 pass, 0 fail. None of the five findings blocks.
**1. A changed expected value in a comparison-style check gets the scoped reader instead of Steps 5–11.5 (FIXABLE).** `literalOnly` only treats a line as a check if it names a call in `CHECK_CALL` (`expect`, `assert*`, `test` and so on). A check written as a plain comparison names none of them. I reproduced this in a scratch repo with `gateEditedPaths`, changing `'old'` to `'new'` in each file:
- `if got != "old" {` in a Go test was not gated, so it goes to the scoped reader.
- `if (got !== 'old') throw new Error('bad');` in a TS test was not gated either.
- `expect(f()).toBe('old')` was gated, which is correct.
Before this diff, all three went to behavior. Both the changelog and `docs/review-policy.md` say "A changed expected value … in the assertion's own statement … still stops", so the docs are wrong for these cases, and no test covers them. Fix: refuse a pair whose statement holds a comparison operator (`==`, `!=`, `===`, `!==`, `<`, `>`) or a `throw`, `t.Error*` or `t.Fatal*`, and add those cases to the test. Severity: Medium. Blocks: no, because a reader still reads the hunk.
**2. The audit-prose check doesn't show the audit made the edit (FIXABLE).** `boundedPaths` accepts a post-review edit to `docs/*-policy.md`, `docs/{captain,unattended,pregate}.md`, `AGENTS.md` or `CLAUDE.md` when its blob equals `--docs-post`'s `hashes[p]`. The problem is in `gstack-docs-candidate snapshot`: it hashes `tracked`, which includes every committed, staged, unstaged and untracked path on the branch, not just docs the audit touched. So any edit of up to 20 lines made after review and before the post-audit snapshot passes. That includes an edit to `docs/review-policy.md`, the file that defines the review loop. The docs only rule out edits made after the snapshot. Fix: also require the path among the docs the Step 14.5 audit record (`.gstack/tmp/docs-audit.json`) says it edited, and require its reviewed-tree blob to equal the pre-audit one. Severity: Medium. Blocks: no.
**3. A literal-only swap can change what a test runs (INVESTIGATE).** A plain quoted string can be a binary path, a module path or an env value. In the same scratch repo, `const BIN = 'bin/gstack-real';` changed to `'/bin/true'` was not gated, so the test now runs a no-op and still passes. Separately, `inTemplate` counts backticks across all earlier lines, including ones inside comments and strings, so one odd backtick flips which lines count as inside a template literal. The scoped reader's brief does ask about bypassed tests, which limits the risk, but the route is wider than "a fixture value the secrets scan flagged". Severity: Low. Blocks: no.
**4. Bookkeeping globs can name build and dependency inputs (FIXABLE).** `bookkeepingGlobError` only checks for a `.tsv`, `.csv` or `.txt` ending and refuses `.gstack/` and `.github/`. That lets through `requirements.txt`, `CMakeLists.txt` and `**/*.txt`, so a 20-line dependency or build change would take one reader. That contradicts the "never code" message. The key is read from the base only, so it takes an owner misconfiguration. Fix: refuse known manifest and build names (or the `DATA_CONFIG` set) both at validation and in `boundedPaths`. Severity: Low. Blocks: no.
**5. A lanes edit is a gate path and still takes one reader (INVESTIGATE).** `.gstack/pregate.json` matches `GATE_PATH` (`pregate[^/]*\.json`), and the lanes kind never checks `isGatePath`. Only bookkeeping does. That is consistent with pregate itself accepting lanes the head adds through `headPolicy`. But it departs from "gate paths get the most review", and the changelog only promises that gate-path prose never qualifies. A new broad glob mapped to a cheap test is caught only by the reader's prompt. This is worth one explicit line in `docs/review-policy.md`. Severity: Low. Blocks: no.
Recommendation: Fix the comparison-style hole in `literalOnly` (`CHECK_CALL` in `lib/ship-patch.ts`) before merge because a changed expected value in a Go `if got != "…"` or JS `if (…) throw` check now routes to one scoped reader instead of Steps 5–11.5, contrary to the documented contract, though nothing here blocks.

1. **Blank lines bypass the new multiline-assertion protection** — `lib/ship-patch.ts:217–228`. `STATEMENT_END` treats a blank line as the end of a statement, so scanning backward never reaches an assertion above that blank line. For example:
```ts
expect(result).toEqual({
name: 'alice',
});
```
Changing only `'alice'` to `'bob'` is classified as a harmless literal rewrite, allowing an expected-value change through the scoped-test route instead of requiring the full review loop. I reproduced this through the actual `gateEditedPaths()` API: the blank-line case returned `[]`; the control without the blank line returned `["test/value.test.ts"]`. This leaves the multiline-assertion repair incomplete. Track statement nesting rather than treating whitespace as a statement boundary, and add this negative control. Severity: Medium. Blocks: yes.
Recommendation: request changes because an unchanged blank line hides a changed assertion value from the new gate protection.
